Highlights of 2009

We had quite the year in 2009. We weren't able to take any trips for awhile (even for our mini-moon) since I was so busy with school. Fortunately I was able to do several performances. I performed my Master's recital the day before Thanksgiving 2008, I did a few opera scenes, and I performed 4 Songs from Peacock Pie in Meany Hall. That was part of the reason we couldn't plan even a short mini moon. That last performance was the day after our anniversary, so I didn't want to deny myself my final practicing time. I was also cast in the school opera. I played Madame Larina, the mom in "Eugene Onegin." The wig they gave me made me look exactly like Mrs Bennett on the 5 hour version of "Pride and Prejudice."

I also worked hard on my 10 Topics (what UW does as a Master's Degree project instead of a thesis) so I could graduate that spring. I also had to get cracking on my piano skills in order to test out of their requirements. They were very different from what had been required for my Bachelor degree at the University of Utah, and I missed the audition for lessons, so I had my work cut out for me.

Oscar loves sunlight. He'd love to go up to the northern coast of Alaska sometime in the summer to see what it's like to have midnight sun. I refused to drive that far, and we compromised on Prince George, the farthest north city in British Columbia. We went there in early July purely so Oscar could see the sun set after 11 and the sunrise around 4. Fortunately, we learned about Wells Gray Park not too far away and were able to see some gorgeous waterfalls.

There were also a lot of beautiful lakes we drove past on our way to and from Prince George.

That was the first of 5 trips I took that year. Just 6 weeks later, I packed my bags and hopped on a flight to Orlando to meet up with my two besties.

The next day we enjoyed the zoo, shows and rides at Animal Kingdom.

We park hopped that day into Disney Studios that evening so we could see Fantasmic in their huge amphitheater.

But Epcot was by far my favorite park.
It's so amazing! Where else can you travel the world all in one place?

We spent a couple days playing in the waves at Daytona Beach and seeing Shamu.

And we had tons of fun going to Disney World Waterparks, Disney Quest, and Downtown Disney. Click here for more about cramming all that into one day

You'd think after 2 awesome trips already I'd be vacationed out. But no! In mid-Semptember we took a fabulous cruise to Hawaii.

We spent our first 6 days on the boat eating fantastic food, seeing entertaining shows, and meeting new friends.

Our first stop was on the east side of the Big Island where we met up with my dad's cousin Harold. I always called him Uncle Harold and remember him being the first person I'd ever heard refer to mashed potatoes as "smashed" potatoes.

We continued on to Maui where we had fun touring the island with our new friends Nick and Liz (or as I affectionately/accidentally call them "Niz and Lick."

Click here for more about our 2nd port of call.

On our stop in Kona, HI, we went back to visit our favorite spot from our previous trip.

Our favorite stop ended up being Kauai. There was so much stuff to see.

And our finally port of call was in Oahu, the most populated island where my mom's friend CJ calls home.

But our trip fun didn't stop there. We also took a road trip down to Utah in early October.

That same month Oscar surprised me with a trip to the animal shelter where we picked up a new kitten.

We decorated a blue and silver Christmas tree (complete with 3 cat stockings) and had Thanksgiving with Nick and Liz.

And to finish off a great year, we took a trip to Victoria, BC on the Seattle Clipper.

Timeline 2007 and 2008

Oscar's parents have a tradition of going on "minimoons" on their anniversary, a small trip instead of a full blown honeymoon. Oscar and I have decided to keep up this tradition, though several of our trips have actually been longer and more expensive than our actual honeymoon was. Neither Oscar or I had ever been to Canada, and from where we live now it was only about 2 hours away. We spent our first anniversary having fun in Vancouver.

That May we took a trip down to Utah to see Oscar's sister Emily get married in the Logan Temple. Our kittens grew up and became cats far too quickly, but at least they're still cute.

My friend Amy came out to visit me in August. She'd never been to Vancouver either, so I took her up for another trip to Canada in addition to all the fun we had hanging around Seattle. Click here to read more about Amy's visit.

We spent a lot of our time that year working extra hours to pay off Oscar's ridiculous school loans from ITT tech. He felt dissatisfied with the education he received there, and decided to drop out of higher education for a year. Unfortunately, they hadn't been clear to us on just how much money his tuition cost, and we were shocked to learn that his 3 classes came to over $12,000! We managed to pay it all off by September of that year, and since we'd spent so much money on something totally useless, we decided to also spend lots of money on doing something fun and memorable. Oscar had never been to Hawaii, so we took a trip to the Big Island with my family's time share points.

Mom and Kathy came with us, but couldn't quite keep up with our drive for adventure.

Since we had to fly in and out of Oahu anyway, we spent a few days there seeing Waikiki and Honolulu, hiking Diamond Head, and going to the Polynesian Cultural Center.

That fall I went back to school to get my Master's Degree in Music/Vocal Performance at the University of Washington. I had the fun opportunity to play Poker Alice in our scenes program, Serpetta in our full opera La Finta Giardiniera, and 1st Knitter in our 1 act opera "A Game of Chance."

We'd heard a lot about the little Bavarian town of Leavenworth out in central Washington, so we took a little drive out there in December of 2008 to see it all lit up at Christmas time.

And we finished off the year with a small trip out to Vegas to use up the rest of my family's time share points.

Stacy and Oscar's Timeline - 2006

Facebook has recently added a feature letting you make a timeline of all of your posts and uploads. It looks pretty cool, but there's far too much stuff to go through. I don't think many people out there want to look at my entire life worth of uploads, but they might want to see the overall timeline of my life events, and possibly look more into something I've done that interests them. For that reason I'm making these timeline blogposts. Each post will be for 1 full year, starting in 2006 when we got married. Beneath each life event I will include a link to a separate blogpost where you can see more pics and find more details.

Poo Poo Point Hike

The Seattle area had a pretty terrible Spring and Summer. We had very few clear days and a LOT of rain. This was made up for by our incredible Fall! September and October were clear and beautiful. When we saw  that an October Monday (Oscar's day off) was predicted to be clear and warm, we decided to hike up to Poo Poo Point in Issaquah. I'd failed to find this trail twice on my own already, so I took Oscar with me (who's great at reading topographical maps), and we started the hike from a point where the maps were more clear and the trails better marked.

Oscar and I love the show Futurama (hence the names of our cats Fry, Leela, and Nibbler), and this bunch of mushrooms reminded us of the character "Hypnotoad."

The viewpoint is much prettier than its name would have you believe.

Paragliders commonly hike up here to start their descent. One glider told us there was another trail this direction that only took him an hour to ascend. And that's with all of his heavy gear. Our hike was killer steep and took us 2 hours, so next time I'm looking for the other one.
There was a nice view of Mount Baker.

And gorgeous views of Lake Sammamish.

The glider also told us that if we started down the other trail, we'd find a lovely view of Mt Ranier.

We came back up to the point to see a glider take off.

Paragliding is now on our bucket list. These guys were mostly retired, had their own gear, and did it about once a week.

It was really captivating to watch him glide down through the valley.

About a week later I decided to hike Mt Si. It's said to be the ultimate Washington hike with a great view and an elevation gain of 3,100 feet over 4 miles. Though the day started off clear, the clouds came in just as I reached the summit, and I didn't have the time to wait for them to clear. I'll have to come back again sometime to see a better view. I was proud of myself, though, for reaching the summit in only 2 hours. Whew! That was exhausting.
